My interest in orchids started as early as 6 years old, when I found a Bee orchid, and started growing when my neighbour gifted me a Cymbidium.

My main growing interest are Mesoamerican orchids, plus recently cold and cool growing terrestrials.

I’m a BOC judge and am the lead for Parent & Kid’s activities within the Society.

I have always loved everything to do with gardens and growing things, even from an early age. Orchids became part of that since receiving one as a present 15 years ago. My modest collection is now proudly housed in my conservatory, and their beauty never ceases to amaze me.

I first started growing orchids as a GP in my consulting room and transferred my caring tendencies from patients to orchids on retirement!

Having gained experience from the friendly Bournemouth Orchid Society members I now act as the Show Committee member and I am undergoing British Orchid Council judge training.

Ken is a keen orchid enthusiast having been a member of the Society for over 40 years.

Vice Chairman and Secretary for the last 12 years, he sat as Chairman for the society and also appointed Society representative on the British Orchid Council. He has now moved to the role of Show Manager.

He has a mixed collection of mostly warm growing orchids.

My interest in orchids started through my husband’s enthusiasm and as a member of Bournemouth Orchid Society encouraged me to join.

I have a collection of cool growing orchids and my current roles in the society are within the show committee, librarian and most recently Hon Secretary.

I got my first phal as a gift in 2011, but my excessive interest in orchids didn't start until 2020 when plants filled the gap that all my other hobbies left.

From 6 phals in 2020, to over 170 plants of various genus now (all grown indoors under lights) phals remain my primary passion, though Vandas recently took first place as my greatest pride!

When I first saw an orchid I thought it looked artificial compared to garden plants, I used to follow my dad in the garden who grew Dahlias,Chrysanthemums and Fuchsias. However my mother changed my thoughts when she bought one. I joined BOS in 2009, won the novice cup in 2011 when I dared to enter my Dendrobium Kingianium and have enjoyed it ever since.

I have still got one of my mother's Phalaenopsis from 2001.

Despite being a very keen houseplant enthusiast, I am relatively new to orchids, having only become truly interested after my first Kew Gardens Orchid Festival visit in early 2020.

The orchid bug bit me and I haven’t looked back!

I have been a member of the orchid society for about twelve years and my main passion is growing cool to intermediate growing orchids; like Pleurothallis & Restrepia. I was the show manager for sixteen years and have seen quite a few changes in the orchid world.

As an Engineer, I was becoming more involved in automating the growing conditions of my wife’s collection of Orchids and, before you knew it, I found myself buying my own Brassia Spider Orchid. One Orchid became two and . . . . . two became . . . . well, lets just say . . . many !
