Local Wild Orchids

Purpose

The purpose of this facility is to encourage members to get out, see local orchids in the wild, and to have a shared space to post their pictures, provide a record of both sites and dates, and importantly, give a space for recording their observations and comments. The aim is to develop an ever ‘growing’ source of useful, straightforward information concerning our local orchids.

The secondary purpose is to encourage our members to go out, not just in the summer months, to search for orchids, but also to instigate searches throughout the year. Who knew that it can be easier, unless it has snowed, to find new sites for bee orchids in the winter months! So let’s get searching and post something interesting!

Pre-Planning

  • Get to know the signs and symbols used in the countryside. They help you identify routes for different users through the countryside (read any instruction boards available on site and refer to www.gov.uk - The Countryside Code: advice for countryside visitors.

  • Check the weather forecast and the topography expected for your trip

  • Wear appropriate clothing, including foot-ware, given the expected conditions

Country Code

  • Do not block access to gateways or driveways when parking

  • Follow local signs and keep to marked paths unless wider access is available

  • Respect others, including fauna and flora – take care where you tread

  • Use gates, stiles or gaps in field boundaries where you can. Climbing over boundaries can cause damage and put livestock at risk.

  • Leave gates and property as you find them

  • Do not pick flowers or dig up plants

  • Take your litter home - leave no trace of your visit
